Primarily this Erector Spinae Group is used to keep your body in an upright position. The muscle runs vertically. It extends and laterally flexes the spine. There are three muscles in this group Spinalis, Longissimus, and Ilicostalis.
1. Spinalis extends and lateraly flexes the spine.
2. Longissimus extends and lateraly flexes the spine and head.
3. Iliocostal extends and laterally flexes the spine.
It is responsible for straightening and extending the spine and helps to bend the spine to the side. Also brings hip up or brings rib cage downward to the hip.
